THE LIFE & SIGNIFICANCE OF G.I. GURDJIEFF
Mr. Gurdjieff Began
His Mission to introduce and establish the teaching in the
West in 1912. Thus the common belief has been that other teachings
predated The Fourth Way, but actually it is just the reverse.
The Fourth Way, he said, is "esoteric Christianity." He was
not referring to contemporary Christianity but to a Christianity
that existed in Egypt, "only not the Egypt we know but from
one which we do not know. This Egypt was in the same place
as the other but it existed much earlier." He said, "It will
seem strange to many people when I say that this prehistoric
Egypt was Christian many thousands of years before the birth
of Christ, that is to say, that its religion was composed
of the same principles and ideas that constitute true Christianity."
So, in fact, The Fourth Way predates all known teachings.
Because he had rediscovered this ancient, prehistoric teaching
of self-transformation—until then unknown—Gurdjieff
could declare that it was "unknown up to the present time."
